Memory care has surged in recent years, bringing with it new possibilities for seniors with memory-impairment and their families. The big development is to move beyond simply providing seniors with opportunities for reminiscing and daily activities, to programs based on wellness, creativity and engagement.
That's the thinking behind Live Now, Live Engaged™ memory care by Benchmark Senior Living.
Benchmark’s approach is guided by research showing that daily routines and structured exercise of the various parts of the brain’s processes can create a more supportive environment for those with cognitive decline, while keeping the brain thinking and working longer—and while reducing outbreaks of challenging behaviors.
Benchmark has successfully implemented Live Now, Live Engaged memory care in 47 senior living communities, giving hundreds of residents and families a program that helps them engage with each other as well as their own hobbies, interests and passions.
The science behind it is promising. Live Now, Live Engaged memory care is a program based on the six dimensions of wellness to encourage interaction with residents using the brain’s different ways of processing information—intellectual, physical, emotional, spiritual, social and community purposeful. Each dimension of wellness is instilled in Benchmark’s program curriculum, which empowers residents to have successful outcomes and support a healthier lifestyle.
Live Now, Live Engaged memory care has three signature components—Memory Care Program Calendar, Written Curriculum, and Engagement Boxes—and recently won the prestigious OPTIMA Award.
Across Benchmark’s communities, Live Now, Live Engaged memory care is a growing success since it launched in early 2014. According to the company's customer and associate surveys, residents who participate have been more communicative and participatory. Caregiver associates have reported a decrease in challenging behaviors among residents after just 30 days of using the program, and families also have agreed, reporting a decrease in such behaviors. Companywide resident participation in the memory care programming has increased 7 percent.
Residents and families also praise the program in their own words. Benchmark recently received a letter from a family who said this about Live Now, Live Engaged:
“I wanted you both to know how much I appreciate the environment you have created in The Harbor since my mother’s arrival last January. Mom seems to have blossomed with the stimulating activities she experiences every day. Despite having Alzheimer’s disease and not understanding where she lives, my Mom often says, ‘Isn’t it wonderful here?’ and ‘I love it here.’ Thank you.”
