As the U.S. population ages and people stay healthy and active longer, senior living communities are adapting. At Benchmark Senior Living, we welcome this trend. Well-designed, livable communities promote health and wellness, and they make for happier, healthier residents—of all abilities.
Benchmark Senior Living operates 51 senior living communities, giving us unique insights into what is most in demand and what works best for seniors—both within our communities and in the surrounding neighborhoods and towns.
In general, seniors want senior living communities that offer low maintenance, walkability and concierge-like services. They’re looking to stay active by strolling on outdoor walking paths and participating in exercise classes, and taking part in book discussions, concerts and other cultural events. These preferences are creating a demand for comfortable senior living spaces that are within easy reach of transportation to town, shops, entertainment and cultural activities.
But they’re also looking for a sense of social connection. Many seniors, including retirees and those who have recently downsized their households, talk about taking an active role in the local community. They want opportunities for community engagement, volunteering, and social inclusion, and they expect their senior living residence to have relationships with the local community to help make that happen.
The Secret to Building Livable Communities
At Benchmark Senior Living, we are proud corporate citizens of the communities where we live and work. We regularly host groups of scouts, students, artists, historians, and veterans, and arrange trips to farms, museums, sporting events, concerts and senior centers. But most importantly, we listen to our residents and design our communities to meet the interests and needs of the very active and engaged seniors they are.
In this way, Benchmark Senior Living is designing livable communities for seniors that takes into account ‘community’ in the broadest sense. Perhaps it’s no surprise that one of residents’ favorite programs is Live Now, Live Well.
Until next time,
