One of the best things I did for my career in senior living was earning my certification as home health aide. It allowed me to truly understand the difference caregivers can make in the life of a senior. Because I was able to view care through their lens, my experience Stephanie Handelsonprovided me with a strong foundation for understanding what really matters when caring for and about seniors.
Since those early days, I have seen big changes in senior living, starting with so many new choices for residents and families. At Benchmark Senior Living, we offer just about everything you can imagine – independent living, assisted living, memory care, even continuing care retirement communities. Other changes include a bigger emphasis on fitness and health, more technology to help us deliver care, and a new appreciation for aging with dignity. It’s all been positive.
But a few things haven’t changed, and that’s a good thing, too. Top among them is the importance of the professional caregiver. If you visit any one of Benchmark’s 50 communities and talk with one of our associates, you will hear about their pride in doing a great job, and a passion for serving others. It’s all about heart, and caring, and working with a purpose. For me, it’s the most energizing part of my job.
So, I say let’s keep advancing as a profession and continue to add new programs and amenities. After all, senior living is a vibrant world with exciting new developments all the time. But in the meantime, let’s celebrate the people who bring their hearts to this challenging and rewarding job every day. You can never underestimate the difference you can make in the life of someone in your care.
