Receives The Business Council of Fairfield County’s Gold Award
for Creating a Healthy Workplace

Benchmark, a human connection company and leading provider of senior living services in the Northeast, today announced it has been honored by The Business Council of Fairfield County in Connecticut with its 11th annual Healthy Workplace Employer Recognition award. Benchmark and its 58 senior living communities, including Sturges Ridge of Fairfield in Fairfield, Conn., were applauded for implementing a diverse range of programs within the workplace that help associates live healthier lives.

The Healthy Workplace Employer Recognition Program was established to highlight the efforts of employers who understand the competitive advantage of a healthy workforce. The program is presented by The Business Council’s Health, Wellbeing and Safety Roundtable, with the leadership support of USI Insurance Services and UnitedHealthcare of CT Inc. and assistance from ConnectiCare and Aon. In addition to Benchmark, this year’s honorees included 57 companies in Fairfield County, including the American Heart Association, Bigelow Tea, Eversource Energy, Mohegan Sun, People’s United Bank, Stew Leonard’s and Yale University.

“These employers know the positive impact that creating a culture of health and wellness can have in and out of the workplace,” says Anthony Aguanno, UnitedHealthcare senior account executive and co-chair of The Business Council’s Health, Wellbeing and Safety Roundtable. “What makes these honorees stand out is how they collaborate with and support their associates to make their programs successful and their associates and their families healthier.”

On Feb. 14, at the Stamford Marriott Hotel & Spa, Sturges Ridge of Fairfield’s Executive Director, Terri Hornikel, accepted the award for Benchmark. “We are proud to be part of the largest group of winners ever,” says Hornikel. “It was wonderful hearing about the innovative wellness programs that businesses in the tristate area are championing, and to be recognized for Benchmark’s wellness initiatives, such as our Virgin Pulse program.”

Since its founding 22 years ago, Benchmark has advocated for active, healthy lifestyles. Associates have access to coaching services and other resources focused on self-management skills, health and prevention behaviors for changing unhealthy habits and controlling chronic health conditions. Over the last couple of years, the company has gone a step further to foster a values-based culture built on empathy and mutual respect where all associates feel valued, engaged and can remain connected to what matters most in their lives.

“As a health care company committed to elevating human connection, we want to do all we can to support our associates in living their best lives,” says Tom Grape, Benchmark’s founder, chairman and CEO. “We are honored to have our efforts recognized, and it’s especially exciting for me personally to see our community honored in my hometown of Fairfield, which is a place that is near and dear to my heart.”

This is one of many accolades Benchmark has received over the last year. Recently, it was chosen by the Hartford Business Journal and Healthiest Employers Group for the inaugural 2018 Healthiest Employer in Connecticut award, and by FORTUNE magazine for its inaugural 2018 Best Workplaces for Aging Services list. Benchmark was also named a Best Place to Work in Connecticut by the Hartford Business Journal for the second straight year.
