River Ridge at Avon Takes Home Top Culinary Award

Director of Dining Corina Rebello Cooks Up First-Place Win at Connecticut Assisted Living Association’s 2018 Chef Challenge

River Ridge at Avon, a Benchmark Senior Living (www.BenchmarkSeniorLiving.com) assisted living and memory care community in Avon, Conn., is known for its fine food. The community’s Director of Dining Services, Corina Rebello, recently received a first-place win at the Connecticut Assisted Living Association’s (CALA) 2018 Chef Challenge at the Radisson Hotel in Cromwell, Conn., beating out competing communities from all over Connecticut. 

Rebello’s winning dish of Osso Bucco with Glace de Veau, Creamy Risotto and Wild Mushroom Mélange earned high marks for its quality, variety, creativity and presentation, taking home the first-place win for River Ridge at Avon in the beef category. More importantly, it proved that you can properly butcher and cook a veal shank according to classical French techniques in under an hour, a point of contention by one of the judges. 

Held as part of CALA’s Annual Conference, the culinary competition invites teams from assisted living communities across the state to compete before a panel of professional chef judges. First-, second- and third-place winners are chosen in each of three categories—beef, chicken and seafood. 

This is the second straight year that Benchmark chefs have received top honors. At the CALA 2017 Chef Challenge, The Village at Buckland Court in South Windsor, Conn., Benchmark Senior Living at Split Rock in Shelton, Conn., and Benchmark Senior Living at Hamden in Hamden, Conn., were awarded first-place wins in all three categories. In 2016, Benchmark placed first in beef and seafood and, in 2015, first in seafood, second in beef and third in chicken. The company has consistently placed in every category of the competition since the award’s inception.
