We’re ready for winter!

In the event a winter storm impacts our region, the Benchmark team is prepared with an extensive plan to ensure our residents and staff are safe and warm. We want to provide you a high level of confidence in the safety and well-being of your loved one, as well as allow you to focus on your own storm preparedness if needed, we thought it might be helpful to provide you a brief overview of our comprehensive preparedness plan. Our early and stringent preparedness ensures that in the event the storm does impact our region, we will be managing through this storm proficiently and competently, ensuring the health and safety of our residents remains our priority.

Benchmark Senior Living has a Crisis Response Team, comprised of experienced senior leaders from Operations, Resident Care/Nursing, Facilities Management, Dining Services and Customer Experience to coordinate and communicate with our community teams to ensure our compliance with our Disaster Preparedness Manual, to make certain we have extra staffing on-site when required and are communicating consistently with our residents and families.

In addition to our regularly scheduled maintenance and testing, our Benchmark facilities team has been testing all emergency generators to ensure that everything is working properly and has the capacity to power the key systems in our communities (emergency pull-cords or pendants, refrigeration, electrical outlets for oxygen tanks, hallway lighting)

In the event we experience phone outages at a community, our Information Technology Group has the capability to route phones to unaffected Benchmark locations (such as the corporate office or a designated cellular phone) to allow our families to maintain contact with their loved one’s community. We also have systems in place to continue to provide updates via email to our families through our Emergency Communications System via Benchmark Connections.

It is a requirement for all Benchmark communities to have a minimum of three full days of supplies ensuring our dining continues uninterrupted. Additional supplies of water and juices have also been stocked at each community. In the unfortunate event we experience power outages; we have the ability to modify menus as well. We maintain very strong relationships with our vendors who are able to provide us with emergency supplies if needed.

  • Each vehicle at the community is fueled and checked to make sure it is in optimum working condition.
  • All Benchmark communities maintain relationships with local town officials, such as the Fire Marshal and Police Department, who constantly communicate with our Executive Directors in the case of an emergency as we are housing a senior population.
  • Our communities maintain relationships with local hospitals and doctors, as well as have nursing on-site during inclement weather conditions and regional nurses are available in the case of an emergency. If a resident is on our medication management plan, we have confirmed that we have an adequate medication supply on hand and have verified all back up pharmacy arrangements. First and foremost – the health and well-being of our residents is our top priority.
  • Each community is prepared in advance for clean-up with all snow removal equipment fueled and operational; ice melt supplies replenished with clear expectations to have our parking lots, sidewalks and all walkways around the community free of snow and ice once the snow has subsided.

In preparation for the possibility of extreme weather conditions and possible impact, the communities will increase their heat in advance of the storm to ensure the residents and staff is warm and enjoying activities in the communities.

We will have management presence staying overnight at our communities as well as dedicated associates to make certain we are staffed to normal standards throughout the inclement weather. This is a direct reflection of the commitment of our associates throughout the Benchmark family who take great pride in the trust you each place with us.

The members of our Regional and Senior Teams are available with 24/7 coverage to provide additional support where needed.

We would also like to thank each of you for your support and for entrusting us with the care of your loved one. We take that trust very seriously and our priority is always the safety and well-being of our residents. As an organization with unwavering pride and conviction in what we do and how we do it, we hold ourselves and our teams to the highest of standards. Benchmark Senior Living’s commitment to excellence is not only during times like this, but every day.

Should you have immediate needs or concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to your Executive Director directly.
