Celebrating National Assisted Living Week 2026: Shining Through the Years at Benchmark Senior Living

Every resident has a story to tell, experiences to share and interests that continue to shape who they are today. During National Assisted Living Week 2026, Benchmark Senior Living communities will celebrate the people, relationships and experiences that make community life meaningful.

What Is National Assisted Living Week?

Held September 13–19, 2026, National Assisted Living Week (NALW) is an annual observance established by the National Center for Assisted Living in 1995 to recognize assisted living residents, families, associates, volunteers and the important role assisted living plays in supporting older adults.

At Benchmark, our assisted living combines personalized, needs-based support with opportunities for independence, connection and engagement. Associates take time to understand each resident’s routines, preferences and interests so that both care and community experiences can be tailored to the individual.

This year, NALW provides a special opportunity to celebrate that spirit.

This year’s theme, “Shining Through the Years,” celebrates residents’ individuality, accomplishments, wisdom and continued contributions. For Benchmark, it is also an opportunity to do something we believe in year-round: get to know residents as individuals and keep them connected to the people, passions and things that matter most.

“Shining Through the Years” at Benchmark

Beginning on Grandparents Day, September 13, Benchmark communities will bring this year’s theme to life through experiences designed to celebrate residents and bring generations together.

Families may gather for special Grandparents Day brunches and afternoon teas, share treasured recipes for community cookbooks or participate in family portrait sessions. Residents may take center stage through Living Library conversations, Wisdom Walls and resident-led talks, sharing their knowledge and perspectives on everything from careers and travel to cooking, gardening, history and family traditions.

Throughout the week, celebrations may also include:

  • Culinary experiences inspired by residents’ travels and favorite cuisines, including international tasting events, chef dinners and culinary “passports”
  • Arts and cultural experiences, such as watercolor, floral design, music, poetry and performances with local artists and organizations
  • Resident story and portrait exhibitions celebrating the people and experiences that have shaped the community
  • Live entertainment and social gatherings, from garden parties and outdoor music to an elegant 1920s-inspired evening
  • Intergenerational experiences that bring residents, children, grandchildren and loved ones together for conversation, creativity and time together
  • Community collaborations with libraries, museums, colleges, historical organizations, musicians and other local groups

The activities may look different from one Benchmark community to another because the people who live there are different, too. Residents’ interests, experiences and ideas help shape how each community celebrates.

Celebrating Who Residents Are Today

“Shining Through the Years” naturally invites reflection on where someone has been. At Benchmark, we believe it is equally important to celebrate who residents are today and what they are looking forward to next.

A lifelong interest can become something to share with a new friend. A favorite recipe can bring several generations around one table. Professional expertise can become the subject of a resident-led discussion. And someone who has spent years learning a craft, traveling the world or building a career can continue to teach and inspire the people around them.

These are more than special events. They reflect an approach to assisted living centered on knowing each person, supporting individuality and creating opportunities for purpose and meaningful connection.

Continue Shining

National Assisted Living Week lasts seven days, but its message extends far beyond September.

At Benchmark, residents aren’t defined simply by their age or the support they may need. They are teachers, parents, grandparents, professionals, artists, travelers, neighbors and friends – with interests to pursue, knowledge to share and new experiences still ahead.

This National Assisted Living Week, we’re proud to celebrate all the ways our residents have shined through the years and all the ways they continue to shine.
