Community Yard Sale Supports One Company Fund

Yard sale

After acquiring New Pond Village in Walpole, Mass., in May 2017, Benchmark began renovating the community, resulting in a large collection of excess furniture, lamps and interior décor. The community then turned the goods into a $3,000 donation for the One Company Fund, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization supporting Benchmark associates in need.

“Our yard-sale team was deeply invested in the project and went above and beyond,” says Director of Business Administration Ann Attaway. “It was a great bonding exercise with lots of laughs.”

In a three-week period, the spirited team collected items and stored them in three empty apartments. On the day of the yard sale, the team arrived early to set up in the parking lot.

Advertisements in local papers, Facebook Marketplace and a local yard-sale page attracted plenty of buyers. A coffee table that raises to dining-table height, known as the “secret coffee table,” sold quickly. New Life Furniture Bank picked up the unsold items to give to people in need of a new start.

After the yard sale, a generous resident, Penny Holmes, raised the total to a “round number” with a nearly $1,000 donation. A New Pond Village resident for nearly eight years, Penny has a special relationship with the associates. “Everyone is friendly, and we enjoy each other’s company,” says Penny. “I like giving directly to the people that need it, not to fundraisers that take part of the money.”
