Benchmark Senior Living Appoints Sigrid “Sam” Usen as Senior Vice President and General Counsel

Waltham, Mass. – Benchmark Senior Living, a leading senior living provider in the Northeast, today announced that Sigrid “Sam” Usen of Wellesley has been appointed Senior Vice President and General Counsel. In this role, Usen will lead the company’s legal department, providing strategic counsel backed by more than 30 years of legal experience.

“Sam has been a trusted voice and advisor in many industries, including financial services and commercial real estate, for decades,” said Tom Grape, founder, chairman and CEO of Benchmark Senior Living. “As we continue to grow within our existing markets and expand into new ones, her sharp legal instincts and deep expertise will be invaluable.”

Ms. Usen joins Benchmark from The RMR Group, where she served as Assistant General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer of the publicly traded alternative asset management firm, whose approximately $37 billion in assets under management included a nationwide portfolio of 208 senior living properties across the full continuum of care.

Prior to joining RMR in 2017, Ms. Usen practiced law at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP. She was formerly Vice President and Senior Counsel at Merrill Lynch, responsible for legal coverage of the High Yield Trading Department. Ms. Usen began her career at Sidley Austin in New York, where she practiced corporate law for more than seven years.

Ms. Usen earned her bachelor’s degree in Political Science and English from the University of Vermont and her law degree from Georgetown University Law Center. She is licensed to practice law in Massachusetts, New York and the District of Columbia.

In addition, Ms. Usen has served for eight years as an advisory board member for Triterpenoid Therapeutics, Inc., a pre-clinical pharmaceutical company focused on developing novel therapies for cancer and other chronic diseases.
