A Day in the Light at Benchmark Senior Living

The longest day of the year, also known as the summer solstice, has become a symbol of how light can drive out the darkness of Alzheimer’s disease. While Alzheimer’s often brings forgetfulness, confusion, and isolation, together we can bring connection, comfort, and hope to those facing this disease.

What is The Longest Day?

The Longest Day was celebrated on June 21st and is a day when people around the globe come together to raise awareness and funds for the Alzheimer’s Association. This global initiative is held every year on the summer solstice to honor those affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.  This year’s goal was to “turn passion into purpose” (Alz.org)1 whether its baking, painting or knitting, golfing, walking, or playing music—everyone can join in, and Benchmark communities did just that.

Why It Matters

Alzheimer’s is an epidemic; about 1 in 9 people over 65 has Alzheimer’s, nearly 7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s, and more than 11 million caregivers provide unpaid support to loved ones. At Benchmark Senior Living, we understand these aren’t just numbers; they represent loved ones, neighbors, and friends.  And we know firsthand the impact this diagnosis carries; not just on those who receive it, but on families, caregivers, and entire communities.

How Benchmark Communities Show Up for The Longest Day

Our communities came together with heart and purpose to support the Alzheimer’s Association’s mission — turning awareness into action in inspiring and joyful ways.

This year, our associates, residents, and families united across Benchmark communities to host bake sales and raffles, organize walkathons and concerts, and celebrate themed days focused on brain health and neuroplasticity. Purple is the color of the Alzheimer’s Association, and purple-themed snacks were served; purple was proudly worn, and countless conversations were sparked — all to raise critical funds and awareness.

A Day in the Light at Benchmark Mind & Memory Care Neighborhoods

From the moment the day begins, residents are greeted with warm smiles, gentle guidance, and compassionate support from caregivers who truly know them. Personalized assistance with the morning routine helps create a calm and confident start to the day, followed by a nourishing made-to-order breakfast shared with familiar faces over friendly conversation.

In our memory care neighborhoods, daily life is filled with opportunities that promote well-being and joy whether it’s a familiar rhythm of music therapy, the sense of accomplishment from completing a puzzle, the energizing fun of a movement class, or the simple pleasure of tending to a community garden. Outings and social games like cribbage are tailored to each resident’s interests and abilities, encouraging connection and cognitive stimulation in a supportive setting.

As the day winds down, residents might enjoy a cozy movie night, quiet reflection in a peaceful space, or time with visiting friends and family. Every evening ends with the reassurance of consistent routines and the promise of another fulfilling day ahead, one built around dignity, compassion, and a deep commitment to creating more good days.

Benchmark’s Ongoing Commitment to Alzheimer’s Care

At Benchmark Senior Living, we don’t just support Alzheimer’s awareness one day a year — we live it every day.
