Achieving Resolutions with a N.E.W.Y.E.A.R.S. Inspired Guide

As the calendar page makes its final turn, we find ourselves standing at the threshold of an exciting new year. The New Year promises fresh starts, new opportunities, and the chance to enhance our well-being. At Benchmark, we believe that everyone, including our residents, can start the year off on the right foot by setting realistic resolutions that cater to their own, individual lifestyles. Using the pillars of the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound) method, we’ve compiled an attainable resolution guide to making the most of the upcoming year. Take in the list down below, and join us in embracing healthy and happy new beginnings in 2024!

N – Nurture Your Body with Regular Walks
Commit to taking a daily walk around a Benchmark community, your neighborhood, in a nearby park or a shopping mall when weather isn’t as friendly. Walking is a low-impact exercise that promotes cardiovascular health, flexibility, and mental well-being. Start with a manageable duration, and gradually increase it as your strength builds. Whether that be a walk of 5 or 50 minutes, getting your body moving is important to good health.

E – Engage in Social Gatherings
Embrace the company you keep – whether that be friends, family members, or any of your loved ones. Our Benchmark communities host countless opportunities for togetherness – may that be a culinary demonstration, a painting class, or Book Club.

W – Welcome Lifelong Learning
Whether it’s exploring a new language, delving into art, or enhancing computer skills, lifelong learning contributes to cognitive health. Learn something new through educational courses – maybe even set a goal to complete a specific number of courses throughout the year – ensuring a continuous journey of intellectual growth.

Y – Yield to Positivity with Daily Affirmations
Start each day with positive affirmations. Cultivate a habit of acknowledging your strengths and expressing gratitude for the opportunities each day brings. This resolution aligns with promoting a positive mindset, fostering emotional well-being and enhancing overall mental health.

E – Embrace Independence
Identify one daily task that you’d like to accomplish independently. It could be something as simple as some light organizing like that messy drawer everyone has, or perhaps more engaging like preparing a meal or managing personal finances. Gradually increase the complexity of tasks to promote a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment.

A – Acknowledge and Express Gratitude Daily
Keep a gratitude journal, whether that be as simple as a Post-it note or as formal as a notebook, and make it a habit to write down three things you’re grateful for each day. This resolution encourages acknowledging the positive aspects of life, cultivating a grateful mindset, and fostering emotional well-being.

R – Rejuvenate Mind and Body with Relaxation Techniques
Incorporate a relaxation routine into your daily schedule. Whether it’s practicing deep breathing exercises, meditation, or gentle yoga, taking time for relaxation promotes both mental and physical well-being. Set aside a specific time each day to unwind and recharge.

S – Seize Every New Day for Joy
Make a conscious effort to embrace and find joy in each new day. This could be appreciating the beauty of nature, enjoying a hobby, or savoring a delicious meal. By focusing on the present and finding joy in small moments, you’ll cultivate a positive outlook on life.

As we welcome the New Year, let’s approach it with optimism, gratitude, and a commitment to our well-being. Our Benchmark communities are designed to foster a sense of togetherness, providing you or your loved one with the chance to create lasting friendships and enjoy a fulfilling lifestyle. By reflecting on the past year, setting realistic resolutions, and embracing new opportunities, we can help ensure that the coming months are filled with joy, purpose, and fulfillment.

Most importantly, be sure to show kindness to yourself. If you fall short of accomplishing all your goals, identify areas for improvement, brush yourself off, and give it another shot. Don’t be disheartened if your initial effort doesn’t unfold as expected. The benefit of a structured resolution list is that it can act like a roadmap for future goals – but improvement isn’t always linear, nor does it need to be. Just remember that setting expectations for yourself is already a step in the right direction and that Benchmark is dedicated to staying by your side as we move forward together. Here’s to a healthy and fulfilling New Year!
