What Happiness Looks Like in Memory Care

When a loved one is living with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, it’s natural to wonder if joy will fade along with memory. At Benchmark Senior Living, we believe it never disappears, it simply takes on new shapes. In our Mind & Memory Care communities, we create moments of joy, connection, and purpose by meeting residents where they are and helping them live fully in each moment.
Happiness in Memory Care: More Than Memories
Happiness in memory care is about so much more than remembering the past, it’s about feeling safe, connected, and valued. Whether it’s a familiar song, a comforting routine, or a warm smile from a trusted associate, these moments spark joy in ways that are personal and meaningful.
For Benchmark residents, happiness often comes from:
- Comfort in daily routines
- Familiarity that reduces anxiety and builds trust
- Connection to people, pets, music and memories
- Purpose rediscovered through meaningful activities
- Moments of calm that replace confusion with peace
Memory care is not about what’s lost, it’s about what can still be cherished. At Benchmark, we help families see that their loved ones can still smile, love, and thrive.
A Personalized, Award-Winning Approach
Our award-winning Mind & Memory Care approach, Connect First, works to evoke positive emotions in those living with dementia, Alzheimer’s, and other brain disorders by improving communication and strengthening human connections, a Benchmark cornerstone. Connect First is an intentional way of interacting that emphasizes connecting with residents as an essential part of providing care. All associates are trained to engage first, building a rapport that fosters trust, eases anxiety, and ultimately saves time.
For example, an associate may spend a few minutes reminiscing with a resident about their favorite song or offering a calming touch before assisting with daily tasks. These small moments can reduce anxiety, build trust, bring joy and foster a sense of safety and belonging.
Connect First creates a sense of unity rather than an “us vs. them”, helping residents feel safe, calm, and supported. Through positive physical approaches, such as modifying a simple handshake to feel safer and more comforting for someone with dementia, our associates are equipped to meet residents where they are, with empathy and dignity.
Grounded in purpose and person-centered support, Connect First ensures every resident’s unique abilities and preferences are honored, creating an environment where they can thrive with dignity, safety, and connection.
What Makes Benchmark Different:
- Connect First: Our signature approach that prioritizes connection alongside care to ease anxiety and foster trust.
- Personalized Daily Routines: Builds around each resident’s interests, history, and rhythms to create familiarity and ease.
- Calming, Purpose-Built Environments: Designed to reduce overstimulation and increase confidence, with visual cues, soft lighting, and secure spaces.
- Creative Expressions Activities: Engages the senses, through touch, scent, music, and more, to spark memory and bring comfort.
- Structured, Yet Flexible Programming: Each day includes opportunities for movement, creativity, rest, and social interaction, all on the resident’s terms.
And most importantly, our associates are the heart of it all. Highly trained in dementia care and deeply committed to our residents’ well-being, they provide companionship and compassionate support that promotes dignity, joy, and meaningful connection.
“Being heard, being listened to, and the quality of care we give to our residents is what sets Benchmark apart.” Charlyse Moses, Community Mind & Memory Care Director
Wellness That Goes Beyond Physical Care:
Our Mind & Memory Care philosophy, grounded in the 6 Dimensions of Wellness (physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, social, and purposeful) and enriched by our exclusive +Sensory program, nurtures emotional well-being and inspires engagement. Whether it’s a storytelling circle, a guided painting session, or a gentle yoga class, each experience is an opportunity to bring joy, spark memory, foster belonging, and enhance well-being.
Every Mind & Memory Care Director is a Certified Dementia Practitioner (CDP), and all Executive Directors at memory care-exclusive communities are also CDPs. Our associates take the time to understand each resident, what brings them comfort, what sparks joy, and what helps them feel most at ease. Personalized routines provide structure and familiarity, while thoughtfully designed spaces reduce anxiety and foster confidence.
Family involvement is always welcome. Loved ones are encouraged to join in daily life, programs, and shared experiences. Many families tell us they feel a renewed sense of connection and peace knowing their loved one is engaged, supported, and happy.
Moments That Spark Joy:
Throughout our communities, joy is woven into the day. A resident lights up during a favorite song in music therapy. Someone reconnects with their past during a family slideshow event. Gentle hands pet a visiting puppy. The smell of fresh cookies drifts from the kitchen during a baking activity. Artwork from our Creative Expressions program is proudly displayed, celebrating each resident’s creativity and individuality.
We offer a mix of one-on-one, small group, and larger group experiences tailored to each resident’s abilities and interests. From morning chats and movement sessions to hands-on art, time in nature, and family celebrations, our programs are thoughtfully designed to bring meaning, connection, and happiness to daily life. Our associates know our residents, which allows them to deliver engagement in ways that resonate, sparking joy in ways only familiarity allows.
