Woodbury’s First Senior Living Community Taking It to the Next Level With Unconventional Interior Design

Orchard Estate of Woodbury, a Benchmark assisted living and memory care community opening this fall in Woodbury, N.Y., has partnered with StudioSIX5 in Austin, Texas, to raise the bar on senior living on Long Island. In their first project on the Island, StudioSIX5 is reimagining the visual environment at Orchard Estate to feature a modern, transitional design that leverages local touches.

The result of countless hours of research, the StudioSIX5 team has captured the visual elements that make Long Island special and incorporated them into the design for Orchard Estate. When complete, the community’s interiors will feature clean lines and a neutral and light color palette with texture and pops of saturated colors combining both traditional and modern elements. For example, the reception desk will showcase a waterfall stone countertop with traditional wood paneling. Other special features include a bistro with a curved bar, nautical wood planking and custom bar stools with button tufting and mid-century modern legs; and, as an ode to traditional design, the use of chinoiserie rugs in the dining room and library.

“Coming into an existing project in an area where we had never done work before was a fun challenge,” says StudioSIX5 designer, Katelyn Varhalla. “The Orchard Estate team was willing to let us take risks, with the goal of raising the bar for senior living in the area. It’s been incredibly exciting to see it all come together.”

Since 2003, StudioSIX5 has taken commonplace, unchanged designs and reimagined them to feature a celebration of life. Over the last 16 years, they’ve led the transition from institutional to resort-inspired design, expanding from senior living into commercial real estate.

“The look and feel of our community is one of the many ways we will keep our residents, their family members and associates connected to what matters most in their lives,” says Doug Cormack, executive director of Orchard Estate. “Long Island has a very special feel, and our residents cherish the deep connections and meaning the area holds for them. We are excited to be able to capture that and give it to them in a way that will connect them to the next new chapter in their lives.”

Set on 3.8 prime acres at 900 Woodbury Road near the intersection of Route 135 and the Long Island Expressway, the community will offer 89 assisted living and memory care apartments for up to 102 residents. The environmentally friendly community will feature a host of amenities, including a bistro, wellness center, family room with full kitchen and dining room, second floor balcony and landscaped walking paths. Orchard Estate will have an enhanced assisted living license enabling it to provide a wide range of care; licensure is pending.
